Pet Eye Infections

Keeping your pet happy and healthy means keeping a lookout for infections. Your pet can't tell you when they are hurting or uncomfortable, so it is your responsibility to watch out for problems like eye infections. At Tahoma Veterinary Hospital, serving Spanaway, WA, and the surrounding area, we want to help pet parents understand what to look for in pet eye infections.

What Causes Eye Infections?

Eye infections can be caused by a variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons, however, is foreign objects or matter getting into your pets' eyes. Your pet is limited in ways they can remove something from their eye that is bothering them. A lot of the time, a foreign object will stay in the animals' eyes for long periods. As the eye tries to water and push the matter out, puss and infection will develop. Other causes could be environmental. If your pet is exposed to an irritant in its environment it could develop an eye infection. Injuries to the eye can also cause infections as well.

Eye Infection Symptoms

The most obvious sign of an eye infection will be watering. Your pet may seem in distress trying to scratch its eye. You may see a discharge coming from the eye as well. Sometimes swelling may be apparent as well.

What Can I Do?

The first thing you can do is wash your pets' eyes out with warm water. Sometimes this is enough to flush out any matter and relieve the irritation. If the irritation persists, you should make an appointment with a veterinarian to have a pet eye infection assessed.
